Students are a crucial part of the higher education workforce. Academic student employees, who are primarily graduate students, provide vital services as teaching assistants, readers and tutors in support of faculty and lecturers, and play an important role in helping to fulfill the university’s research mission.

Contract
Student employees in academic research or instructional support titles are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Regents of the University of California and the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW).
The BX Bargaining Contract applies to students employed in instructional support titles, including Teaching Assistants, Associate Instructors, Teaching Fellows, Readers, and Tutors.
The BR Bargaining Contract applies to students employed as Graduate Student Researchers, including certain employee GSR Trainees and Fellows.
Note: The Graduate Student Assistant-Researcher title is not in use on the Santa Cruz Campus.
